Is your site accessible for people with disabilities? Would a screen reader on your site give the user a good experience? Do you know about Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)? Do you know about Website Accessibility Initiative (WAI) outlining the international guidelines on accessible web design? Will elderly or disabled people shop on your site?

European regulations operate against discrimination of disabled people under the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995, requiring that today’s websites meet a basic set of guidelines (WCAG 1.0 & 2.0). Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to penalties in most European countries. In the US, websites need to comply with Section 508.

Website accessibility is particularly important for those website owners working with the general public or providing public services but website accessibility affects every area of website design and a well produced, accessible website is a positive advertisement for your organisation.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines currently in use globally are WCAG2. WCAG2  comprises 65 checkpoints broken down into three conformance levels, priority one (A), two (AA) and three (AAA):

• A: The most basic standard. Websites must comply with all priority one checkpoints to achieve this standard
• AA: Websites must comply with all priority one and two checkpoints to achieve this standard. It is advisable to deliver a website which has been tested to satisfy these checkpoints
• AAA: The highest standard of accessibility. Websites must comply with all priority one, two and three checkpoints to achieve this standard. You may choose to satisfy these checkpoints.

Automated testing on its own is not sufficient to audit site accessibility. At Testronic Labs we use a combination of tools, such as Sitemorse^® and manual testing by our in-house experts to fully audit your site to the required WCAG2 conformance level.
